The Walt Disney Treatment

It is rumored to believe that the animation legend himself, Walt Disney, was cryo-genically frozen to preserve his body, and to be restored to life in the future. I decided to try something similar, cryotherapy. I didn’t use this treatment for self preservation instead, I used it for a therapeutic purpose.

Whole Body Cryotherapy is a form of medical treatment using liquid nitrogen and refrigerated cold air. It has only been used as a form of medical treatment in the United States for about 10 years. Recently, athletes have been utilizing cryotherapy as an alternative to ice baths to alleviate muscle soreness, which is why I sought this alternative treatment. I went straight from a workout to test that theory myself.

In order for you to receive treatment, you have to strip down to minimal or no clothing. You do have to wear long, almost knee high socks, and mittens. You then step into a standing, vertical vestibule (think of a standing tanning booth). Once you are inside, the pedestal you are standing on is raised so that your neck and head are above the chamber. The liquid nitrogen is then turned on creating a vapor to the tune of -180 degrees Celsius. Yes, NEGATIVE 180 degrees. The treatment lasts between 2-4 minutes, I was in for 3 of the longest minutes- as cold as ice.

I did feel effects immediately-energy! As the day progressed, I felt tightness in my body especially, in my stomach. My stomach felt flatter and tighter up until the next day. I slept really well the night of the treatment, also. So where does one go to receive cryotherapy? I went to Grace Medical Aesthetics in Middlebury. They are actually running a Groupon so you can try a session for yourself! Without the deal, one session costs $55. Would I do it again? I would. This is something fitness centers should look into offering!

Big thank you to Grace Medical Aesthetics for their friendly staff. I hope to be back soon!

Master Reset

wp-1485822895011.jpg

Off season for me is from mid- October to Dec31st. My birthday is October 22nd, and I’m notorious for a month long celebration. What that includes is, more time away from the gym, enjoying a few extra glasses of champs and indulging in not-so-clean eats. It’s a two month free for all for me, and I enjoy every moment of it.

Birthday celebrations consisted of LOTS of dining out, an all girls trip by limo to the vineyard, and a vacation in Arizona- just to name a few festivities. After October, Thanksgiving sneaks up on us, another excuse to indulge. Before you know it it’s Christmas, the holiday where food is usually a little more decadent and the wine flows more heavily, and- it is also my favorite holiday. Then it’s the last hoorah- New Year’s Eve. I spend the last night of the year popping bottles, knowing the next bottle I pop will not be until February.

Jan 1st,2017 detox begins. Time to clean out all the toxins I have subjected my body to over the past two months. I have a few methods to detox, the most important method is WATER. I easily consume my body weight in ounces of water each day. Water is such an integral part of being healthy, you know the secret to know if you have drank enough water for the day? Urine. Drink until your urine is clear, those kidneys are working like a Brita filter. Plain water gets boring after a while, right? Right. Well, I have two recipes to bring some excitement to that H2o. Warm lemon water being one of them, and a grapefruit juice fat burner. I have posted about the importance of lemons previously, but just to emphasize on it’s benefits again, lemons help to increase your metabolic rate, thus allowing you to burn more calories and store less fat. It is best consumed within 30 minutes of waking up and before your first meal. I make a large batch so when I wake up all I have to do is warm it up. Lemons are known to provide energy, an extra benefit if you workout in the early morning. Secondly, fresh squeezed grapefruit juice. It is best consumed before a meal, to aid in fat burning most effectively. Certain compounds in grapefruit burn up stored body fat. I, also, make a large batch of this and bottle it for convenience. I will post both recipes for my cleanses, below. Wheat grass is slowly entering my daily regimen, as well. I have included the link for the brand I am using. I will post, solely, on the benefits of wheat grass at a later date. Oh, and last, but certainly not least, NO ALCOHOL.

Meal prep Sundays have always been consistent year round for me, but my meals become super strict for the first 2 weeks of the new year. Lots of roasted veggies, protein shakes, egg whites everyday, lean proteins and rationed portions. I will also post a sample of my meal plan. I cannot express how crucial prepping meals are to sustain a healthy diet. When all of your meals are planned, there is no room to snack on something that can sabotage your weight loss goals. Lastly, it’s back to the gym for 6 a.m. gym sessions. Six days a week, 1 hour workouts(minimum), to shed those added pounds that have piled on for 2 months. It will take just as long to work off the fluff maybe more, maybe less, but persistence is key.

No alcohol for 30+ days, lemon water, grapefruit cleanse, clean eating, and working out. That’s it, that’s my secret, that’s my master reset. Think you can do it? I think you can.

Warm Lemon Water:

3 Organic Lemons = 1 Cup

2 Tsp Trader Joes’ Raw Honey

1 Large Dash of Cayenne

1 Cup Filtered Water

  • Juice lemons, mix honey, water and cayenne. Store in large glass bottle.Refrigerate. Heat to warm within 30  minutes of waking up every morning.

Grapefruit Fat Burner:

2 Cups Filtered Water

  • Juice grapefruits, mix honey, apple cider vinegar and water. Add to bottles. Refrigerate. Drink before meals.

Chocolate is a Food Group

Honestly, who doesn’t love chocolate? If you don’t, we can’t be friends. At least once a day, every day, I enjoy dark chocolate in some way, shape or form. I remember as a kid, one of my favorite breakfast meals were s’mores pop tarts. Gooey marshmallow fluff, melted chocolate embodied by a graham cracker crust. Chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream, chocolate chip pancakes, double fudge brownies, and oven warm chocolate chip cookies- just to name a few sweet treats I indulged in. Now, my love of chocolate has been elevated to Dark Chocolate, a much healthier option, unprocessed and raw.

No more pop tarts but, everything else I enjoyed as a kid, I still do-the healthiest version possible. For instance, chocolate chip pancakes, Bob’s Red Mill makes an organic high fiber pancake mix. I add Enjoy Life dairy-free, nut-free and soy-free dark chocolate morsels to the batter just like mom did, and topped off with organic maple syrup. They actually taste better than I remember! I never gave up on foods I enjoyed as a kid, I just found a way to make them healthy. There is a healthy alternative for everything, if you’re not sure how to make a swap- ask me! Immaculate, a baking company, sells organic cookie dough. The square pieces of dough that you break off, put on a baking sheet and watch magic chocolatey cookies appear with a nice glass of dark chocolate almond milk, mmm!

Everybody loves Nutella, did you know there are companies that make a better tasting, and better quality hazelnut spread? Meet Nutiva, a superfood company. They have products like coconut oil, hemp oil, protein powder AND organic hazelnut spreads. Not only is their line packed with nutrition, they pack high value-are non gmo and organic. Make the swap today!wp-1476749977880.jpg

If you buy quality dark chocolate with a high cocoa content, then it is actually quite nutritious- aim for 70% dark or higher. Dark chocolate is loaded with organic compounds that are biologically active and function as antioxidants. These include polyphenols, flavanols, catechins, among others. Consuming dark chocolate can improve several important risk factors for heart disease. It can lower the levels of bad cholesterol(LDL) and boost levels of good cholesterol(HDL). Therefore, making chocolate a heart healthy food of course, in moderation. In my opinion, chocolate everyday should be suggested as a food group -It already is in my world.

A Ballerina and Athena

Today, I fulfilled my dreams of becoming a ballerina…

It happened in a barre class led by Athena.

As a child, my mother enrolled me in dance class. Not soon after I was kicked out of dance class for being the rebel I am. I can still remember it- a pretty Tiffany blue rotary phone was what I was more fascinated with over pirouettes. I would use that pretty phone to call people, my family. Apparently, I had an obsession with telephones early on in life, because I also remember being with my mom in a Radio Shack, and using a phone that they had on display and it was connected! Again, I used it to call my family. I forgot about that until just now, do you remember that Mom? Anyway, the class began to follow my lead and wanted to call people, too! I guess this is when my personality developed and my leadership quality emerged, probably not the best timing. The instructor didn’t like our phone breaks and eventually told my mom to pack my ballerina slippers.

No ballerina slippers necessary for barre;bare is fine. The woman who instructed this class is Athena; fun, energetic, motivating. She leads you through a series of strengthening, low impact movements targeting your core, arms, legs, and, of course, your butt. All by using some basic ballet movements such as, a Plié, a Relevé and turn outs. Movements I never got to learn in dance class two decades ago.

The barre is used as a prop to balance while performing exercises that focus on isometric strength training (holding your body still while you contract a specific set of muscles) combined with high reps of small range-of-motion movements. At Athena’s, there is only one barre that is attached to a mirrored wall, like you imagine the barre would be, but there are also two others you can claim your spot on that are portable, anchored by heavy dumbbells. In addition to utilizing the barre, SMALL hand weights are used. Initially I picked 10lb-ers, NOTICING everyone else had small hand weights, but I ignored the fact because I just thought I was stronger than everybody, haha. My barre neighbor then suggested I should consider a smaller weight, like a three-pound baby weight, because there are a high amount of reps utilizing them. Suggestion taken. Those baby pound dumbbells were used to do jabs, upper cuts and air punches, all while in Relevé.  I NEVER would have survived using those 10lb-ers. You will also use a small, slightly deflated, soft rubber ball and a yoga mat, for the latter part of the class for more core focused work.

Some major benefits of barre are improved posture, muscle definition, weight loss, increased flexibility and reduced stress. You don’t need to be a dancer to take a class or even be flexible. I don’t consider myself to be too flexible and I managed to Plié.  Being as this was a completely different workout that I was used to, it was somewhat of a challenge, but once you become familiar with the movements and terminology, your inner ballerina emerges. There were definitely moments of burning buns and fiery abs.

I love trying new ways of working out, it’s always good to train the body in other ways. If you are interested in trying a class Athena’s offers a free first class. Living Social is ALSO running a great deal .

Thank you Athena for helping me find my inner ballerina, and for not kicking me out of class, even after I was running late.

Don’t Sweat Not Sweating

Dumbbells Up

Ya know when you do something differently that’s out of your “norm”, and then the next day you kinda don’t get back to your “norm”, and then it’s been a week and now you have a new “norm”?  Well that’s what happened to me. I was in the process of packing and moving and so, my fitness regime took a back seat. I had switched my gym schedule to nights prior to the move so, that time became designated to packing. I could have woken up earlier in the morning before work to get a workout in but, I didn’t. This led to me taking almost two months off from the gym, 7 weeks I believe. I didn’t miss going to the gym, at all. I knew eventually I would ease my way back in, I just had no intentions on doing it anytime soon, hence my 7 week hiatus. However, my eating habits remained the same;meal prep Sundays, clean eating. I maintained my weight and kept my muscle mainly due to, moving boxes and spending time unpacking. I actually ate less for a short, very short period of time!

As of two weeks ago I returned back to my regularly scheduled program. Meaning, 6 days a week, not just one or two days which, I did do a couple times throughout my hiatus, but I’m not counting those. The time I took off from the gym happened to be well needed, sometimes we need to hit the restart button. I gave my body a break from spinning, lifting, pilates, running, and yoga. Days weren’t revolving around fitness classes and budgeting time to fit in a workout . So, I returned to my temple of fitness, picked up some dumbbells and got right back at it. Before my time away from the gym I had gotten in the habit of getting my workout in during fitness classes, solely. A habit I needed to steer away from and get back to training myself. Don’t get me wrong, fitness classes kept me fit but, I needed that one on one time for myself, just me and the dumbbells all alone. I’ve designated Mon, Tues and Wed to Group Fitness Classes, and the remainder of the week I work solo. Weights, Sauna, and Stairs, Oh My.

Did I miss the gym? Not really. Did I beat myself up about not going? Not really? Did I enjoy being out of the gym? Absolutely. I think people start to develop this funk when they are away from the gym, people can tend to become depressed and then feed on that negative energy. You just have to keep telling yourself that you’re going to go back, you WILL be back. Make it a mantra , and who knows, tomorrow might be that day where you set your alarm for 5 a.m. and climb 42 flights of stairs on the StairMaster. I’m here to tell you, It’s ok to take time off! It’s like vacation time that you take off from work, yeah you may feel bad about taking time off, or worry about work piling up, but taking time off is encouraged. You are more productive after a master reset, it’s a fact! So, don’t sweat not sweating, even if it’s been 7 weeks.

I’m On a Boat Well, Not Really…

PullRowing---NO-Studio_d400

Pull Rowing, welcome to Branford, CT. A very fit and active community composed of cross fitters, runners, spinners, lifters and now-rowers. I remember when I drove by  what used to be, the towns old movie theater, and has since been converted into a complex of studios and storefronts.  I saw a sign above the big display window- Pull Rowing. So, just like any other curious mind does, I googled it. The website was still under construction, but you were able to get the gist of the studio, their schedule and pricing. Now I have rowed before at my local gym, but I didn’t row for long. After a while it becomes uncomfortable because of the small, hard seat you sit on to glide back and forth while you row, my butt goes numb from that seat!  Needless to say, I didn’t do it much, and it gets boring after a while. However, eventually I learned if you play with the buttons on the screen there is a game where you row to catch fish (a-ha bet you didn’t know about that feature). The one thing that did catch my eye on the website was their rowers. If any of you are familiar with House of Cards, you have seen Francis and Claire Underwood row from time to time. Well, Pull Rowing has that type of rower, WaterRowers. I wanted to row in style like President Underwood, if the President uses it then it must be worth another shot, right?

I arrived up to Pull Rowing Studio and I was immediately greeted by smiling faces, a crystal, aqua- blue painted studio with beautifully finished wood floors throughout the whole space. A studio that gives off the perception of the ocean and a boat, just as if you were rowing out on the open water(genius). Everybody was super friendly and genuinely enthusiastic about your presence. They have a display with that same aqua blue, glass water bottles by a wall aligned with apparel. Then you walk into the actual row room, there is a section with free weights and the rest of the space is lined with WaterRowers,2 rows. Mirrors ran across the length of the room and natural sunlight beamed in through the large storefront windows, which made the water in the rowers glisten like the sun hitting the ocean water. By each rower there is a yoga mat and a towel is left for your use on the rower, an indication that you were going to break a sweat and would need it, which I did.

I picked my rower facing the mirror, to keep an eye on my form during the whole class. A few rowers down from me I met Tom, one of the owners. An experienced rower, long distance runner, cross fitter; an athlete. He shared with me the concept of the rowers, created by a rower(John Duke) to simulate rowing during the cold months when the rowing team wasn’t able to hit the open water. However, I doubt John Duke had a studio like Pull Rowing that gave off the oceanic vibe.

Time to row with Blake , but first a stretch. Once you strap in, she teaches you the basics of rowing. We programmed our rowers to 100 meters for our warm up. Once you are warmed up, you transition to the mat and utilize those free weights I picked in the beginning of class. She demonstrated a variety of exercises some with the weights, some utilizing your own body weight. Lunges with biceps curls, squats using just your body weight, mountain climbers, overhead presses, dead bugs(lol), etc. Throughout the remainder of the class, your meter goal increases up to 500 meters! You row 100/150 meters more than you did in the warm up, then mat work, row 100 meters more than the previous round, then mat work. I was sweating during the warm up and already was using the towel that they so kindly provided. When I arrived, I initially thought I would just be rowing for an hour. Thinking about it once I was in the studio, I began to doubt if I would survive but, it’s not an hour of JUST rowing. It was a full body workout alternating between rowing and exercising off the rower, it was intense. Even though you aren’t there to compete with anybody in the class, I was secretly competing, (well actually trying to keep up) with Tom. He blew me out of the water though, lol. Lastly, once you reach the finish line, you are rewarded with an ice cold towel, followed by a closing stretch.

It was definitely a great outlet to incorporate a new type of exercise into my routine, and just like anything else, the more you perform, the faster and better you will be at rowing 500 meters. Thank you to all the staff who welcomed me, it was a great time!

I wonder if i could beat Frank Underwood to the 500 meter finish line?

Salt Cave Therapy

Just like I like to save money on food shopping, I like to save money on experience. Actually, I am all about saving money on anything and getting a smoking deal. GROUPON and LivingSocial are my resources for dining, gifts and activities. It’s a great outlet to try a new place to eat, or in my case…a salt cave for a reduced price. Sessions run at $40 per 45 minute session, via GROUPON I paid $25. Now that’s a smoking deal.

Saltana Cave is a man made Himalayan salt cave in Ridgefield, CT. It is run by a woman named Anna Husted from Poland. After visiting a salt mine in her native country with her daughter, she noticed an improvement in her daughter’s asthma over a period of time. Asthma, allergies and other respiratory conditions have gained therapeutic benefits by breathing in the air of the salt mines. Other conditions such as ADHD, ear infections and arthritis, just to name a few, have also had improved symptoms. However, I did not go there with the intent of being healed although, I do suffer from asthma. I went for the experience. As some of you may know, I recently started meditating. My intent was to meditate and relax in this room lined with pink bricks of salt coincidentally, the same salt I use on my food. At home I have a Himalayan salt lamp, which has been said to be a natural air purification system. I could only imagine how pure this cave was going to be and well…. this cave magnified the effect of purity.

cave

You are advised to wear white socks on your feet upon entering the cave. Once you step into the cave, you immediately are encompassed by salt crystals underlining your crisp white socks. The room is lined with 10 zero gravity lounge chairs beneath an LED, sparkling, starred ceiling. There is an illuminated fireplace built with bricks of salt filled with large chunks of salt stacked inside like logs of wood would fill a fireplace, minus the the effect of fire. Blankets are provided, as the room is cool and climate controlled in order to maintain the property of the salt. Once you have selected your lounger and you get comfortable, a soothing male recorded voice over serene music is played to provide some 411 on your experience, and the benefits the cave provides. After that it is 45 minus of purity and clarity. The first thing I noticed was the air filling my lungs with crisp clean air, I can definitely see how asthma symptoms would be relieved, I felt relieved! I struggled between meditating and wanting to take a nap, mainly I just took in deep breaths with my eyes closed and remained thoughtless and deeply relaxed. Once the music ceases it’s time to exit the salt cave, leaving relaxed and refreshed, almost in a trance-like state.

Would I go back? Yes…If I had a smoking deal. I went for the experience and for the opportunity to share it with all of you. I love trying new things, it’s very intriguing to learn about other cultures and their holistic practices. Stay tuned for my next adventure….
